Mitigation VS Restoration

Before I got involved in this industry I had absolutely no idea what mitigation was. Over time, I've found that many people are in the same position. For most people, mitigation isn't in their mental dictionary. Either that, or that mental dictionary is telling their reader that mitigation and restoration mean the same thing. Although both are used to recover and restore buildings after fires, water losses, and mold damage, they both have their individual purposes.
Mitigation
In Parker County, TX, a homeowner has come home to a toilet that won't stop running. With water drowning the floors and baseboards, immediate action must be taken. In this situation the homeowner is in need of a professional that can remove the water, damaged flooring, and other materials that might be damaged such as drywall and baseboards; once the damaged materials are removed that professional then needs to dry out any remaining moisture to prevent mold and decay as well as disinfect all affected areas. This professional needs to perform the mitigation process.
Mitigation is a process utilized for preventative measures. The goal is to salvage what can be salvaged, and prevent any further, or secondary, damages from occurring. That is what SERVPRO of Parker and Northeast Hood Counties specializes in; saving your home while also saving your wallet from having to start from scratch.
Restoration
Once SERVPRO has completed the mitigation process and successfully salvaged the home, it is then time for a restoration company to sweep in and make the house feel like home again. Restoration is repairing, replacing, and salvaging whatever is left. This generally includes replacing flooring, baseboards, and lower portions of walls. Restorers may also try to salvage and restore certain pieces in the home rather than completely replace them. A lot of homeowners even take the mitigation and restoration process as an opportunity to remodel their home, especially when the water loss was a big one and a significant amount of material had to be removed.
Restoration is the act of bringing the space, at minimum, back to normal. While SERVPRO of Parker and Northeast Hood Counties may not specialize in this process, we often work with a local company that does.
To conclude, mitigation prevents while restoration repairs.
